I did enjoy this book but I felt the book is world driven mostly. It depicts a gorgeous description of the world they live in and their culture.

However, with this in mind, I feel the description is at some points a little too intricate, it doesn't neglect the story, but there are elements of it you forget because you are so focused on creating a picture of the world.

One important detail I found out was that the blurb doesn't match the story. It says "Ten years ago, her mother was snatched by the royal guards" yet it mentions multiple times in the book the event was "seven years ago".

Overall I enjoyed the book. I found the story interesting, the world intriguing, and the characters mysterious, and will continue with the series, especially since the book ends on a gripping cliffhanger.

It was good. The writing was great. I just don’t usually read such dark looks.

An incredible fantastical reimagining of Malaysia with powerful character design and intriguing political world building. I adored Ngan's realistic take on the unwilling concubine and demon king relationship, and we can never say no to some LGBTQIA romance... This book brought me back into the mindset of my preteens when I would blitz through books in just a few days. However, I wasn't a fan of the ending and don't think I would continue with the series.

The girls of paper and fire is one of those books who have been hiding at the back of my bookcase for years…. And after reading it I have to apologize towards them. They didn’t deserve my silent treatment. The first book is in my opinion a good read. The book has a heavy theme but that’s to be expected.

I fell in love with this book immediately. The world building and lore are solid and brilliantly written; the characters feel like complex, whole people who really inhabit this world.
