“Some things are achingly beautiful when seen through the mist, but when you take a closer look, it’s just a pile of bones.”

Ballad of Sword and Wine by Qing Tang Jiu masterfully blends political drama and lyrical prose in a richly crafted world of power dynamics and personal ambitions. Despite the heavy political themes, the novel is surprisingly easy to read due to its accessible storytelling.

The story follows key players in a kingdom on the brink of change, with well-developed characters and nuanced political machinations offering a thought-provoking look at power and loyalty.

Qing Tang Jiu's elegant and approachable prose ensures clarity amidst the political intricacies, making it engaging even for those who typically avoid politically charged novels. This captivating blend of politics and poetry keeps you hooked until the very last page.

After reading Thousand Autumns and the first volume of Peerless I was excited for another political danmei but something about this book did not vibe with me. The political schemes were all incredibly convoluted and barely seemed to follow each other and the interactions between the two main characters seemed odd and out of place half the time, as if they were interacting just for the sake of it.

There's also a hell of a lot of characters in this book and keeping them straight is a nightmare, especially since Seven Seas have begun cutting down the character list and glossary segments at the back of their danmei.

Will not be continuing this series.
