Oh this is a new favorite.
I think my critique of other English translated Danmei is that the first books are always the worst. They just don’t pull you in even if they are bangers.
This book is the exception. I was hooked, the enemies to lovers angle is juicy and boy does it leave you wanting more at the end.
Already ordering the second volume.

It's a travel day that means there are books to finish! 🥳
As per most Danmei this rating may change when I finish the full thing, but this volume was a fun start.
I very much love the back and forth banter and jibes that go between the leads. I do wish we were given a little more insight into how Shen Zenchuan felt towards Xiao Chiye. It is an odd book where Xiao Chiye's perspective we are given full access to his thoughts but for Shen Zenchuan's we are not. I understand it is to protect the secrets of the plot but it did make it a bit different because he is so aloof to know how much he wanted the romantic attentions.
I also really enjoyed once the actions got started the overall set up of the plot. It is interesting and I definitely feel invested in more than just the main leads. That said, this is a heavy political book and unlike others I have read, I found myself having to pay super close attention to what was happen because if I didn't I would be lost. I enjoy a political novel but that attention required made it a slower read for me.

The initial chapters are heavy on exposition, which may be a struggle for readers like me who are unfamiliar with ancient Chinese politics. However, once you wrap your head around who is fighting who exactly, the political intrigue becomes quite enjoyable. I will say, I think the experience could have been improved with a more comprehensive glossary.
It’s really refreshing to read a danmei without fantasy elements, and I’m glad the romance sticks to realistic outcomes. The progression of closeness between the two main characters follows a very satisfying upward slope. Finally, this novel has delivered to me an enemies to lovers, where both the reason they are fighting and the reason they grow close feel totally reasonable.
I assume there are more books planned for translation in this series, but it’s pretty strong as a standalone.
