First half of the book is extremely confusing due to not understanding the political complications. It does get better as you go though and the main characters are complex and likeable!

My biggest gripe with this book is that we get a lot of insight into what Xiao Chiye is thinking about Shen Zechuan (
his attraction and list for him
) but we don’t get a lot of insight the other way around. I have no idea what Shen Zechuan truly thinks of XC (
did he also want to bang him at the end?? Or did he just do it to manipulate XC?
)
