I had no idea what was going on for like 75% of this book, but I had a great time reading it all the same.
It started off with a bang and I was INSTANTLY enraptured. Then we dissolved into a lot of exposition and name dropping. I’m super bad at remembering names, so the glossary in the back was utilized quite thoroughly. Sometimes it can be hard for me to differentiate the characters who will be important later, and who’s just there for flavor. But by the end of the book (and many deaths later) I started to get a better grasp of the main players.
I’ve found that I often struggle with the first volume of most danmei I read. A lot of them use that space establishing the world, characters, and motives through exposition and side plots that don’t really matter. I experienced some of that struggle with this book (sans the side plots because there were none), but the two MCs were so entertaining together, I enjoyed it more than most first volumes. I can’t wait to see what volume 2 has in store!

This was real good. Like, REAL good.
If you liked Thousand Autumns, I think you might enjoy this one too; it is more of an actual palace intrigue rather than a cultivation sect one, though. The conversations between the two main leads tended to be confusing at times, it was like a riddle after riddle, but in the end, you suddenly grasp it- grasp all of the hints left for the reader throughout the story and finally understand the nature of their relationship.
The writing was very good. I liked that, amidst dialogue, the characters would be described doing things that technically don't serve to push the story, but make them feel like real people. It's about the little things, like tapping your chopsticks against the table or wiping your blade.
Same with the pacing. Even though a lot happened, I felt it was structured well.
I am going to continue reading. I enjoyed myself.
