jonathan strange & mr norrell was such a unique reading experience for me. i’ll be honest, the beginning (literally the whole volume 1) was excruciatingly slow. there were so many moments when i almost put it down, but i’m glad i persevered. once the story really starts moving, the chaotic, whimsical energy pulled me in completely.

what surprised me most is that i ended up loving the side characters far more than the two magicians themselves. childermass, stephen black, lady pole, and mrs strange had such depth and heart, and i couldn’t help but feel invested in them.
strange’s descent into ‘madness’ after arabella’s death was one of the highlights of the book for me. it was written with so much raw grief that i felt genuine sympathy for him.

i do wish there had been more exploration of characters like mr honeyfoot, mr segundus and lord byron, who seemed full of potential but stayed on the edges. still, the footnotes more than made up for it. they gave the world such richness, as if i were reading an actual history of english magic.

it’s not an easy read. it's dense, slow, and demanding at times, but it’s also unlike anything else i’ve ever picked up. whimsical, eerie, and strangely beautiful.

This was insane. The amount of brilliance in this is inconceivable. The footnotes have to be some of the best footnotes ever done in fiction. They added immensely to the work. They were integral and didn’t seem just there to be there like it can be so often in other books. This book is just smart. It definitely, I think, ramped up in pacing toward the end and I don’t know if I’d say it was too fast or not. We also saw the actual practice of magic toward the end whereas elsewhere we just saw the outcome of a spell. I don’t know if I can say that was bad or not either. Overall though, this was so meticulous and well-thought out. I absolutely LOVED. The relationship between Jonathan and Arabella. It was my favorite part of the book. Wow, just wow.
