Not my thing. It felt too long and drawn-out, especially with the way it was written. Very old and dry language. I didn't care much for any of the characters. The footnotes also took me out of the story since I sometimes needed to stop mid sentence to read a short story, in very small text, that could span up to 3 pages. Then back to the middle of the sentence to continue.

I really enjoyed the sarcastic dry humor and presence of historical figures. I liked how the main characters were flawed and at points difficult to like, but I could still have people to root for through side characters (Stephen, Childermass ). The footnotes were very fun and contributed to an exceptionally easy to imagine world. While the pace was slow, I thought it worked well at immersing me into the story. The writing style in general was amazing and propelled the book to lofty heights.

Although several friends recommended it, it didn't work for me. I wasn't interested in the story or how it was told. I couldn't have cared less. Too many books, too little time.
Hmmm this was a very long book. It was somewhat cozy in that there was a lot of lore and side quests and side stories. At times it was difficult to get through yes but I think worth it toward the end. A long amount of time went by and yes many things happened but also felt not a lot happened. Definitely an enjoyable read but a difficult read.
I tried. Hard. I wanted to like this book. It won a Hugo Award and a Locus Award. It has glowing reviews — more than one from my own Goodreads friends. But I read 17% of it (thanks to Kindle, I always knew exactly how slow I was progressing through this novel), and it was so dry, tedious, and lifeless — and the footnotes, they were even more dry, more tedious, more lifeless, and also painfully irrelevant. I'm going to put this down for now, read something else (or a few something elses) and try to come back to it. I'll update this review if I ever manage that.
