Interesting 2nd book. This was pretty good and better than the first book. The characters grow but there is still some tedious fighting between Sophie and Liam.

The Water Legacy Is the second book in the Hidden Legends: Academy of Magical Creatures series. The Fire Prophecy ended just before their school break and this book starts just after the break when they're returning to school. It was a lot of fun to return to this series and Orenda Academy. The plot deepens in this book and the same happens to the romance between Sophia and Liam. These books are definitely on the long side, which means some things take a while to develop, but they keep my attention and it's great to be stuck in the same book for so long.
At the end of book 1 we got already a hint of what will happen in this book and this book builds further on that. Liam gets an assignment from the water council and Sophia gets an assignment from the fire council, both keep this a secret from the other as well as other things. Sophia has to perform a ritual to find out more about the prophecy, while Liam is tasked with proving Sophia isn't the chosen one or kill her if she is. Even with that all going on they grow closer in this book. Then there is plenty of other things going on, we see more of Jonah and Imogen as well. And all the awesome familiars that live in this world. There are academy scenes about their classes as well and we learn more about the world, magic and creatures.
I thought this was a great sequel. It's interesting to see all the plot lines develop. While some things move slowly it stays interesting and there are enough different things going on that you don't notice it as much that some things take a while to progress. I liked how at the end a lot of the plot points come together and there are some interesting new things we learn. Although at the same time I had kinda hoped for more, when looking at the big picture it feels they only get some small new pieces and still have a long way to go. I like the hints and undercurrents of tension that take place, it's clear something big is coming to the tribes and the tribes are poised for war. We get to see more of the fire and water council their scheming and I like the way it feels that things are set up for the rest of the series.
Sophia and Liam grow closer in this book and I liked seeing their relationship develop. I did struggle with the fact that while they have this epic love and it's obvious how much they care for one another, they're both keeping really big secrets from the other. The strange thing is, these secrets and what they do with this are mostly relevant while they're not together. When they're together they aren't thinking of those secrets and instead enjoying eahc other's company. There was more focus on the physical aspect of their romance and I would've liked more talking and sharing secrets, but there are some really touching and sweet scenes as well. Ofcourse those big secrets come out at the worst possible moment and there's a bit too much drama for my taste there. I just couldn't understand why they wouldn't confide in one another and tried to solve things together. They both have their reasons, but they didn't feel like good reasons to me and the fact they love one another so much made it even weirder they keep these things from the other. I did enjoy reading about them and seeing how they're trying to make things work as their love is forbidden. I also was happy to see Liam being fully committed to their relationship in this book.
There are plenty of great side characters in this series and even so it stays easy enough to remember who is who. Add in a whole lot of awesome magical familiar creatures. I like how Jonah and Imogen have their own things going on and even some of the other side characters have hints of what's going on in their lives. It makes it all feel very realistic.
I am glad I listened to this one as well as it's great in audio. Both narrators do different voices well and I enjoyed listening to this book.
To summarize: The Water Legacy is a great sequel. I really enjoyed being back in this world and spending time at the academy surrounded by magic and magical creatures. The second book in this series was kinda saddening to read. The fact that the two main protagonists are very much in love but plagued with so many secrets, weather those secrets were shared with each other or not, kept me wondering the entire book when the other shoe would drop and when these secrets would catch up with them. Though it was nice for the female protagonist to gain more strength every day in her magical abilities and become less of the girl that first entered the school gates. It was nice seeing her grow into a strong person with great potential. It was also nice seeing the hero of the story becoming more independent without his bonded animal, though he has earned my respect for the way he tried to protect the heroine. Though the ending was very emotionally investing and heartbreaking to read about, I believe it had to happen but it could have been handled differently.
