Only reason it’s not a 5 is just the fact that it’s a little too slow paced for me.

This book was really good, especially if you have some background knowledge of Greek myths. The background knowledge is not required to enjoy the book, however it makes each character feel like an Easter egg. This book included so much and had definitely inspired me to read Ariadne next.

prior to covid-induced quarantine, i very rarely ever reread a book. needless to say, rereading a novel less than a month after the first read has never happened...until now. it's a testament to how truly compelling circe is: a masterpiece of a retelling w/ evocative language that powerfully illustrates both the terror and preciousness of mortality--a valuable lesson for all, gods and mortals alike.

a page-turner abt a woman's extraordinary life filled w/ oft-startling wisdom and language that brims w/ power. whether it be the world of gods or mortals, men rly aint sh!t. ive never cared abt greek mythology but it was quite interesting to read abt it here, as miller spins a retelling w/ keen observation and great reinvention. circe's musings and realizations and relationships--some so breathlessly touching, some quite jarring in their truth--are prolly my fav part of the book. a great, thought-provoking read--and from now on i'll read anything madeline miller writes.

Now I understand why many people recommend this book and the author. I found it super original and beautiful in both the narrative and the use of lesser-known aspects of Greek culture and myths, especially the way in which the novel is divided. The fact that we learn about Circe's life through the compilation of various tales reminds me of the way in which various myths are written/passed down.

This book was amazing. It was a bit slow to start, but I had heard such good things and loved SOA so much--and wow am I glad I kept going. This book made me feel every possible emotion. Everything I knew about Circe came from reading the Percy Jackson series as a kid, so I knew nothing of what to expect with the plot. It was just incredible. Miller is a fantastic writer, and I copied so many beautiful quotes and passages into my notes. I love the whole concept of this book, of telling the story of Circe's life, of making the epic about her and the stories that never get told. I'd recommend this book to anyone I could convince to read it.

I read Circe right after I read Ariadne (I had a neighbor named after her!), and I’m glad I did. We always hear Greco-Roman myths where women are always worse off. It’s refreshing that these stories are being told from different perspectives, so we hear more in-depth about them. I started reading the physical book, but I think the audiobook is a much better format for Circe.
