I tore through this book in a weekend, it was so good. The title sums it up perfectly, part adventure, part survival story, part rescue mission, along with some interesting anthropology thrown in for good measure. Zuckoff is thorough, but still manages to keep the narrative moving at a good pace. Highly recommended.
There has been so mcuh written about the story of this book that I have nothing new to add.
It is a fun, true, feel good book. It reads like an action novel but the events in the book are true.
However, the people whom I found the most interesting were the people of New Guinea and I would have to learned more how they saw the events and how it affected them afterwards. These are people who have lived in a prehistoric world before 1945. I would have also liked to learn more about the Filipino-American battalion and what became of them.
I suspect the survivors of the crash were more traumatized by the events they they would like to admit.

I thought this was a well written, well researched account of a very interesting story. I especially appreciated that the author didn't focus solely on the experience of the American survivors but also presented perspective of the indigenous people. Really enjoyed this one.

Really interesting story about 3 people crash landing in the middle of Papua during WW2. I don't run across many stories that are set in the place where we lived in Indonesia and this is a really interesting one that attempts to reflect the geography, culture, and time of Papua in WW2. Very good story, well written.
I really enjoyed this book, so much so that it is hard to say what was great about it. The story telling was key, as is the intriguing topic. There is great interplay between the day to day rescue operation and the history of the area of New Guinea, as well as the personal histories of those involved in the rescue. There are great photographs included to illustrate the narrative, and great care has been taken to interweave reality and supposition.
I mostly read fiction but every so often I pick of a nonfiction book and when this was brought to my attention I wanted to read it. I putzed around with it a bit but never starting it until the day it was due to be returned to the library. once I started it, I had a hard time putting it down. I great narrative about 3 survivors that crashed in New Guinea during WWII and their experiences being among the first outsiders to meet the valley's isolated stone-aged people. A really readable book.
Wow. This book was written very well. Lots of facts, like [b:Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience and Redemption|8664353|Unbroken A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience and Redemption|Laura Hillenbrand|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1327861115l/8664353._SY75_.jpg|12946965] - my favorite.
Wet gangrene is worse than dry. I didn't know there were both wet and dry forms of that disease.
WACs sound hot.
I didn't realize that the Philippines were so involved with WW2.
I dunno about the subtitles of the book. It didn't seem like the most daring. It was only a little bit of survival and Adventure.
I'm still surprised by all the details he got from the tribes. how long did it take to learn those thousands of languages they speak.
