This is the kind of story that if it weren't true would be completely unbelievable. Zuckoff writes well, and the narrative has just the right amount of back story to flesh out a page-turning yarn.
The story in this book was good and was a harrowing tale, but it was a slow-moving story. The story started great but didn't really pick back up until close to the end of the story. I appreciate that Zuckoff did not embellish on the story which would have taken away from it, I feel that the story in and of itself was lacking in the middle.
Read this book if you enjoy stories of survival. Do not read if you are expecting a war story. This is not that.

An interesting adventure tidbit from WW2 history that I hadn't heard of before. The story itself is exciting, though the author tries to milk more drama out of it than it really has. Would've made an excellent long magazine article. As a book, it's okay but unexceptional.
An absolutely wonderful book! The only time I put it down was when I was at work. These are the stories that need to be passed on. The Greatest Generation is quickly leaving us and it is our job to keep their memories and heroic actions alive! A must read.
