Started off as exactly what I want: a description of a piece of art (Duchamps’s Fountain), its context, the artist’s philosophy of art, why the piece mattered. I _understood_ the fountain after that chapter.
But then it was just mini biographies of artists, protracted cafe scenes and all. Blah. I finished the Impressionist and Post Impressionists chapters with no new understanding of either movement beyond the anecdote that sometimes Manet got feedback on Monet’s work.

I just finished re-reading this book .... it is by far one of my favorite art history book on modern art ... it is really insightful and well written ... very engaging and invigorates an artist like myself

Ho apprezzato. E' divulgativo al punto giusto, senza cercare di risultare divertente a tutti i costi o cadere nel classico manuale di storia dell'arte. L'ho tenuto sul comodino per tre mesi circa, leggendo di un movimento per volta, e facendo qualche ricerca in internet per vedere le opere citate.
Purtroppo le opere presentate nelle illustrazioni sono molto, molto meno di quelle citate. Mi è sembrato strano che, spesso, le opere discusse con più interesse dall'autore non comparissero poi tra le tavole. Costi eccessivi di realizzazione? Problemi di copyright? Chissà. Io butto lì un'idea: perché non abbinare al libro anche un sito web, una galleria Pinterest contenente i quadri e le sculture discusse?

Disappointing
Lost me around the Surrealists, the rest is just clever words and indulgent rather repetitive nonsense. Needed a more critical approach - which was more evident in the first half.
