The book went from good to exceptional with the epilogue.

I think Tiffany Aching is his best work.  She's such a well developed and realized character.  We've all been her age at some point and faced many of her same challenges.  Many of us have kids in our life whether as parents, siblings, aunts, uncles or cousins and we'd be lucky if they all grew up with the confidence, heart, intelligence, empathy, and self perspective as Tiffany.  The beauty of this series is she has all those and she also questions and doubts her self too like any well adjusted person.

So we get to the epilogue and it is a perfect ending, even if its not the ending I want.  I want more, I want to see her grow up and become Granny to others, but we know it cannot happen.  So we're left wiping away happy tears as we see Tiffany grow up and figure out what she wants, we see her start to make a life for herself and all we can do is hope the children in our life turn out like her.

Knowing that this is the very last discworld book Terry Pratchett published makes me a bit emotional. Again, there were great themes in this book and the only reason they were not explored further were due to the author's alzheimers disease. "I Shall Wear Midnight" remains my favourite book of the series, but I think this is a worthy finale to the Tiffany Aching series and I am so happy that there is a sense of closure here.

A sad book, and a powerful book; a fitting end to the series, and a book made all the poignant by the Afterword explaining that Terry Pratchett never got to finish off this tale of endings as fully as he'd have liked. The lack of polishing off shows in places, but in the context it somehow doesn't matter.

In plot terms, this is a story about Tiffany Aching and the return of the elves, but it's really a story about the gaps that are left when people are gone, about grief and carrying on, and about finding your way in the world that is even when you're wishing the world was still as it used to be.

This book is very much a conclusion. It's definitely one to read for those who've followed the Discworld series, though I fear a non-Discworld reader might be a little underwhelmed.
