It wasn't fair of me, but I really wanted this book to be a giant punch in the gut, a bittersweet, poignant, brilliant book that had me laughing and crying in turns, that would leave me even more haunted by the loss of the amazing Terry Pratchett. And that's a lot to expect of a book. Plus, I did know until reading other reviews that Pratchett hadn't finished this before he died. This likely explains why it didn't feel like his other books.
It seems right that his final book would be a Tiffany Aching story since she began with death and loss. [b:The Wee Free Men|34494|The Wee Free Men (Discworld, #30; Tiffany Aching, #1)|Terry Pratchett|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1443764106s/34494.jpg|62580] is an exceptionally powerful book and I tear up every time I read it. The Shepherd's Crown is best read not only after all the other Tiffany Aching books, but several others as well ([b:Equal Rites|34507|Equal Rites (Discworld, #3; Witches #1)|Terry Pratchett|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1407706800s/34507.jpg|583611], [b:Lords and Ladies|34529|Lords and Ladies (Discworld, #14; Witches #4)|Terry Pratchett|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1469186110s/34529.jpg|1185086], and [b:Raising Steam|11275323|Raising Steam (Discworld, #40, Moist von Lipwig #3 )|Terry Pratchett|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1375882313s/11275323.jpg|16202400]...which themselves should be read after other books. Look, just start at the beginning, alright?) Tiffany Aching is a witch who has not one, but *two* steadings (areas that she serves), and is finding herself stretched thin. On top of that, the barriers between worlds are no longer protected and the 'fair folk' wish to come and have fun once again. Unfortunately, their idea of fun involves knives, death, and the kidnapping of children. Tiffany must rally everyone to fight off the incursion and find her place in a changing world.
While it doesn't surpass his other books, it's still a good one. If you haven't read Terry Pratchett, then you need to speed straight away to your local library or book store. He is by far my favorite author & his loss was quite a blow.

This is the last Discworld novel that Mr. Pratchett penned before his passing. It does a good job tying up loose ends, though it's not as polished as it would have been if he had time to devote to revisions as he's done on all his other wonderful Discworld books. But, if you're like me and have read a lot but not all Discworld books, this final volume will inspire you to go back and fill in the gaps in your reading. Strongly recommended that you read all the Tiffany Aching series prior to this one.
I received a free copy of this book from the publisher at NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my review or opinion of the book in any way.
I was lucky enough to get approved for reviewing this book for NetGalley! I was so happy about it! I have to say, this book is everything I could have dreamed of in Pratchetts last book.
My beloved Tiffany Aching is back, as with my previous reviews, I love her to bits! She's such a brave character even though she's young. She really does remind me of a younger Granny Weatherwax. She isn't afraid to go against the grain and do what needs to be done - she isn't worried about being liked, she's there when you need her and isn't afraid to do the job.
This story had so many big shocks in it! I adored the plot twists (there were quite a few) and all the new possibilities it brung. The story starts with a bang and finished with an even bigger bang. I felt tears coming to my eyes in various places! The events are so realistic, you really feel for the characters. As with the previous books, the events are realistic and flow together beautifully. If that world existed, you could really imagine it all happening!
I love how, being the final book, it really does sum up Tiffany Aching's story... yet it still leaves room for imagination. I can happily say I was satisfied with how the story ended. I usually dread reading the last book in a series in case I'm disappointed, but I'm glad I read this book.
We see plenty of our beloved Nac Mac Feegles! I love them to bits!! They're such unique creatures, I love how protective they are of Tiffany. I was hoping we'd see them again for one last time and we did :) Their personalities really shine through in this book and it's a brilliant example of how realistic make-believe characters can be.
I'd definitely recommend this book to lovers of Discworld or the Tiffany Aching sub-series. So far this is one of my favourite Discworld novels and it doesn't disappoint. If you like stories about witches, elves/fairies, strange and wonderful worlds, and even gods! Then this book is for you :)

The last book of the Tiffany Aching series and the last book of the Diskworld series. It was a fitting end. As mentioned in the end notes, had he not been so unwell, there was more to be added. Still, it felt comfortable. Thank you Terry for putting in the effort to do those final 5 books. They were appreciated!
Not so much a rating/review as the marking of an end of an era.
Snif.
