When a local high school girl went missing, her classmate raised the alarm. Her classmate asked his grandma, who happened to be a famous celebrity lawyer, for help. Despite her resourcefulness, Hester knew she was pressed for time and had to ask the best person for the job – the boy from the woods. Wilde, aptly named such because of his bizarre upbringing, lost no time to look for the missing girl.
Many years back, he was found scavenging for food all alone in the woods. Nobody knew his upbringing, no one came forward to claim him and perhaps due to trauma, Wilde himself did not have any memories of his parents or his past. Although he did well after he was adopted, the woods remained his home, and he employed all his facilities to look for the missing kid, because he knew, he was lucky and it was a rarity. The girl might not be blessed with the same fate.
I quite enjoyed the plot, but for a book with this title, I expected more spotlight to be on Wilde, but it was equally distributed with the other main character, Hester. I liked the sense of humor and the characters were realistic but something in the way it was written made it seem like all of the characters sounded like they were cut from the same cloth. True, they were different personalities, but the voice of the characters seemed similar that it made me constantly conscious that it was written by the same author. Thankfully it didn’t get in the way of the reading and the ending picked up so overall, I had quite a blast reading this.

I was hesitant to read “The Boy From the Woods,” because I vehemently disliked “Tell No One”. I started it with the intention of skimming it fast and it really surprised me. Yes, it has some issues but as a whole, it was entertaining.
I didn’t like how this book also has the unexpected female killer who really did it for a good reason. That was meh, although her story at least made sense unlike Elizabeth’s. If I hadn’t read “TNO” I might have liked this storyline better. As it was, it wasn’t surprising and felt like a repeat.
I would have liked it if Raymond got a better resolution instead of some of the other characters who deserved it a lot less, but I can see Coben’s point about the justice system.
The Eggers storyline was chilling and sadly true to reality these days…
I liked Wilde a lot; he is messy and flawed but it works. I kind of like that we didn’t get all the answers about him. Usually, it’s annoying with so many mysteries left unsolved but somehow it works to add to the feel of this book.
And I’m a sucker for cool old people, so Hester and Oren were perfect for me.
All in all, not bad at all.
