Wayyyy too many pop culture references and the dialogue was kind of cringy at times, but delivered a very important message nonetheless.

I think I'm getting old... The whole book just felt way too teenagery. I know it's YA. And I usually love YA. But this was a bit too much tbh. Also, I am not that interested in politics. I did like the characters though and I really hoped for everything to end well.

At first I was really rustled because of how whiny and entitled the protagonist seemed, but this book grew on me - it also made me realize that I love a good slow-mance! This was the romance novel I didn't know I needed!

I enjoyed this book. Based on reviews from others who are more knowledgeable, it missed the mark on some things. It was an easy read, though, and I liked that they portrayed how teens can get involved.

2.5/3. Was originally going to have it be 3/5, but the book felt 100 pages too long and somehow still rushed? The second act just stretches so much only to have such a quick third. Plus, I read comments from Muslim readers who felt like her faith was kind of shafted for an easy solution. I’m not Muslim, and am very white, so I can’t speak personally, but if a main demographic from the book take issues with that demographic’s portrayal, it feels noteworthy.

I’m also a poli sci major who did canvassing for a local election, and it feels like everything is oversimplified—from the interactions with characters regarding politics to the conflicts. The duo are upset that they can’t just go to a neighborhood that isn’t on the lists as though it’s safe to let two teenagers go to a neighborhood that hasn’t been pre-approved. I’m very left-leaning, but the lack of nuance or subtlety felt grating given that this book is 400ish pages long.
