It took me a little while to catch onto the storyline (what are heterodynes? Sparks? What's with the locket?) but once I did I loved it - so odd, so silly, so witty and it just rambles on...

An original and entertaining steampunk graphic novel, Agatha is a wonderful heroine. Great characters, wonderful setting and world building, if perhaps a little confused initially.

Nice introduction to the series. I like Agatha and am left wondering what is happening to her and how she's going to get out of the fix she's in.

Volume one of the ongoing webcomic Girl Genius, this volume gives us the background to this steampunk world of mad scientists ('Sparks') and their minions and introduces us to Agatha Clay, the girl genius of the title as she discovers her own talents.

I've been reading Girl Genius for a while now but it's nice to go back and start again, and read it in a much more compressed format, rather than three pages a week. It makes it much easier to follow the story and remember the characters, not to mention flick back if you forget any of them. I enjoy this sort of mad scientist steampunk and the art is fantastic (and volume one, originally in black and white, has been re-issued in full colour too!). Great fun, if quite short.

...eh... Weak start, highly cluttered frames, underwhelming dialog, under-explained mythology, characters that aren't especially compelling... That said, it finished pretty strong, strong enough that I'll probably look at book 2.

The story was super confusing and I was relatively uninterested the whole time even though I tried to invest myself but nonetheless 3 stars because it was fun, short, and cool art!

(Feb 2018) I'm rereading Girl Genius after not having been up to date with the comic for years, and the first volume is a solid start to it. The black&white start and muted colors throughout are used effectively in an interesting contrast with occasional splashes of brighter color to show Agatha's dormancy and awakening. There are a lot of interesting plot hooks, some of which still haven't been fully explored in the rest of the comic to date. I was really struck on this reread by Agatha's self-doubt and how much she grows in competence and confidence over the course of the comic. This first volume does a lot to establish how her imposed inability to focus impacted her and established that lack of confidence. It's really hard to stay confident in her potential when she's unable to act on it and no one around her will believe she even has any. Anyway I love her and I enjoyed my reread a lot.

I was not impressed by this at all. It didnt flow well, I didn't like or identify with any of the characters. The story seemed random, and left a lot of things unexplained. I won't be reading any more of these.

I have enjoyed Foglio's work since the days of "Phil & Dixie" in Dragon magazine, and this web series is no exception. It's a fun steampunk / gaslamp romp, and I've taken to buying the books instead of reading the web comics in order to financially support authors & artists whose work I enjoy.
