I reviewed this book here:

Sweet, whimsical story of "leaf people" who appear under the full harvest moon to celebrate. A grandmother tells the leaf children that it is the autumn equinox and they are celebrating the harvest, and the kids play while the adults prepare a party. Although I agree with some other reviewers that it's a little weird to have people with pumpkin heads who are eating pumpkin pie, the story drew me in and I didn't have trouble suspending disbelief. The gorgeous illustrations in brilliant autumnal colors made me homesick for the Northeast!

I did notice that the "men and boys" bring in the harvest, and that the leaf boys play the pumpkin-stacking game while a leaf girl stands around in Mary Janes and a cute sweater watching them. I'm just sayin'.

Magical story about the Harvest Moon falling on the same night as the Autumn Equniox (as it did this year). The wind blows in leaf people/ families to celebrate the event on an Apple Hill farm. Beautifully illustrates the sense of wonder that accumpanies this time of year.

4.5 stars... The magic of autumn awakens the leaf people from piles of leaves to celebrate the autumnal equinox; the beginning of fall. This would be an enchanting bedtime story to read for fall.

The book begins by showing us some of the hard work and long hours that farmers put in when the autumn equinox sets in. It then shifts to a more fanciful tale of the Leaf People and their equinox celebration under the golden-orange light of the Harvest Moon. Ziefert balances the festivities of the holiday/event with the long-standing cultural significance that the autumn equinox has held across much of (at least) Europe and North America (Note to self: research the autumn equinox in other parts of the world!)

I enjoyed the pacing of this book, the festivities described, and the balance that Ziefert brought to the book. The art is gorgeous and I will most certainly be looking for more of Mark Jones' work. By the Light of the Harvest Moon is going to be one of the first books I buy for my children. It captures the spirit of autumn and the equinox perfectly, while gently reminding us of the historic and cultural reason behind the holidays at this time.

A great story that illustrates the magic of the Autumnal Equinox. Would be good for a elementary age read aloud.
