Great book!

This is a phenomenal book: the true story of William kamkwamba, who taught himself electromagnetism out of an outdated textbook in rural Malawi during the 2001 famine in order to bring wind-powered electricity to his family. And that's just the beginning of the story! Highly inspiring book, sure to be engaging (and bring some much needed perspective) to American children and teenagers.

So absolutely inspiring! William's story moved me deeply and I was so excited to run to YouTube and see his first ever TED talk in Arusha, Tanzania where he was rightfully recognized in a room full of his peers. To see his evolution since then also is incredible. We can all learn something from his life.

I am simply just in awe with this ambition William had to continue educating himself when he could no longer afford to go to school. And his education was to benefit his community after suffering for a couple years of drought and starvation. I think this is a great book for all children to read because it will let them know that no matter your situation, all is possible when you give it all that you can.

This was one of the books I was selected to read for our Battle of the Books. It was a very neat story, but a lot of the science-y talk about how he put things together was just over my head. Otherwise, a good read!

I read this book to my 13 and 11 year old boys. We loved it. I loved reading it to them and talking about what we had just read. William, you are our hero. Brave and smart and beautiful. Thank you for sharing your story with us.

Inspiring story of a boy who, with little formal education, seeks to make life better for his family and village in Malawi, Africa. He reads about windmills and decides to build one. Through shear determination, in the face of famine, poverty and almost no support from the others in his village (they thought him crazy) he perseveres and realizes his dream. This dream takes him on a larger adventure.
