<spoilers ahead!>
The age gap here felt really gross to me, not just because he was about 20 years older than her, but because he kept saying stuff like “her innocence is what saved me” and that feels very creepy and predatory to me. he saved her when she was 6 or whatever and there’s a line mariposa says that’s like, “i fell in love with him then, but it was a different kind of love than what it is now” and like ??? that’s weird, not romantic. he literally renamed her when she was a child, and they both thought it was cute. like what????? if someone NAMED YOU AS A CHILD and you later grew up and fell in love with each other, everyone would think he groomed her. and i know that it’s not technically grooming, but it gives me that vibe. anytime you have to say “oh it’s not technically this” that’s not a good thing lol. and on top of that, many characters brought up how wonderful mariposa is for capo because of her innocence, which again just feels weird to me. i felt like mariposa’s character really emphasized how childlike tendencies in grown women are often sexualized and romanticized. she calls her vagina an oonie for christ’s sake lol. overall, their entire romance just made me feel kind of gross
