I don't know what to make of this book.

Emotionally it struck a nerve and I thoroughly enjoyed it on that level. The main character, Alison, is well-developed and has struggles that I think a lot of people will relate to, even if on a less dramatic level than the character experiences. I'd recommend it for that alone.

However, the author's lack of first-hand experience with any of the main aspects (
Spoilersynaesthesia, tetrachromacy, hospitals for the mentally ill
) really shows, and left a bad taste in my mouth. The author notes in a Q&A at the back of the edition I own that
Spoilershe wrote the book speculatively before leaning that synaesthesia was real
and it shows—at one point Ali
Spoileris described as having paranormal abilities, and she does, but it's been packaged up in a real condition that progressively gets more paranormal
. Additionally, one character's use of ableist language without any kind of note that he's wrong for doing so stuck felt badly handled, and Ali's relationship with
SpoilerFaraday felt extremely dodgy despite the book trying to explain away that it wasn't a patient-therapist relationship after all, even though it was framed to Ali as such, and at any rate the ages involved are problematic
.

So that leaves us with a book that was 80% excellent and yet completely lost me for the other 20%. I found the ending unsatisfactory too; compare with, say, Foz Meadows'
SpoilerAn Accident of Stars
where
Spoilerunbelievable things have happened to the Earth character and the struggles they have coming up with a cover story and lying to people about it
and this all felt like it wrapped up a little neat and tidily. I was surprised to find out there's a follow-up book to this, because it doesn't really feel like there was anywhere for the narrative to go. I probably won't be reading it.

Science fiction that's not all about science fiction, the way I like it.
This book was really interesting, learning all about Allison's abilities and her synesthesia. Learning about synesthesia in general was enthralling and especially in a way that wasn't specifically scientific.
And then you throw in the
Spoiler aliens and your kind of like "What?"
That part was hard for me to buy into. It was one the reason i set the book down for a couple of weeks but never the less I enjoyed it. I found it sad how it ended, how Sebastian had to stay behind but I like to believe what Allison does, that he will find a way back to her :)

This is one of those books that fit everyone’s taste . Well I’m one of those victims. Where should I start honestly this was the first book that I read in the genre of mystery and drama and that’s when I found out I’m more into these kinds of book than I will ever be for e.g romance. Its a rare book and I loved it finding a book similar to this will take time as it’s one of a kind. Every chapter is full of mystery and shocking news the illness the first character has actually educated me for school. Kind of a good book for biology lmao. I love it literally and the relationship they have between Sebastian is sooo cute I want one.... if any of you guys know a book similar to this one pleassse inform mee❤️

"Once upon a time there was a girl who was extraordinary. She could hear colors, and see sounds, and taste the difference between truth and lies. But hardly anybody knew that, and she preferred to keep it that way."- Ultraviolet

There is not much else I can say about the book without giving stuff away, but this has become one of my new favorite books. I am not usually one for a science fiction book, but Ultraviolet had an amazing, original plot with a lot of twists and turns that kept me guessing until the end. The characters were all very real, and I grew to care about all of them and what happened to them. To me, that is one of the most important things about a book, having a believable, original story with a cast of equally believable and original characters to keep it going. Something else that I loved about the book was that even though it is a work of fiction, it taught me something new about the human brain that even I with all of my college courses in psychology did not know about. The book made me want to research and learn more! All in all, Ultraviolet does everything right.

If you want to know more about Alison, her stay in the Pine Hill mental hospital, the murder she may or may not have committed, and her gift to see, hear and taste the world in ways most people would never dream of, then read this book!

I loved this book! The way the story fitted together was very strange, and it was usual that most of the story was set in normal earth, supposedly from the point of view of a mad girl, with the more fantastical things only featuring in parts of it. It still leaves you with a niggling sense of doubt about the character and what really happened, but you want to believe the story she tells as much as she does. Wonderful read - impossible not to get absorbed by.

Overall rating: 3/5
Plot: 3/5
Char: 3/5
Hum: N/A
Rom: (the trouble was, I liked the romance but I didn't like how large the age gap was) 2/5
Writing style: 4.5/5
Warnings: None

(Maybe spoilers?)
Reading this book was a pleasure (thus the high WS rating) and I raced through it in an afternoon. Yet somehow the story and I just didn't quite click, which was odd because it has a lot of elements that I like like synesthesia, a very interesting look on mental hospitals and relationships when there's something different that people take to mean wrong about you. In fact, the only thing that I might actually fault would be that there was too much going on!
Still, I know a lot of people really loved it and maybe if I'd read it on a different day in a different mood I would have enjoyed it as much as them.
