How do you rate a book of short stories? By how many of the stories you liked? By how strongly they spoke to you? By how many will be scared into your brain?

Of the 23 short stories 4 stood out that I truly liked and would read again.
Loser
Phoenix
Torcher
Inclinations
& Smoke confused me. This one I need to read again to try and figure it out.

While Fight Club was the book that led me to Chuck "Expedition" didn't really do it for me.
& The first two stories almost turned me off to the whole collection.

I did enjoy how the animal characters showed up in multiple stories connecting them in a way.

I read only the SS “Loser”. Cracked me up.

#readingchallenge2020 (my book that begins with an M)

Painful feeling to rate Chuck so low, however I felt so strangely disconnected from the characters while reading each story.

Each story definitely had they typical Chuck Shock & Awe factor. I didn’t mind the weird, gross, mindfuck content presented within each tale, but there was something about the overall characters, and their edginess, that didn’t work for me. Maybe it felt too gimmicky, too forced, too large of an attempt to be strange.

Even stories where I enjoyed the ‘theme’, such as the suicidal teens, or the bad Christmas gifts, I still felt disappointed by the delivery. The tales lacked the deep impactful quotes that draw me to his novels, or the deep bizarre feelings. It felt like more..’being gross to be gross’

While some of the stories in this collected volume of shorts are entertaining or decent reads, Palahniuk seems intent on creating situations just for shock value and forsaking the other elements of storytelling. There were glimmers here and there of his older works (thinking of Rant, Snuff, etc.), but most of the stories were just gross-out factors thrown in with liberal doses of misogyny and general disdain for the female gender.

Stories of interest were:

Zombies
Torcher
Liturgy
Expedition
Inclinations

A mix of classic Palahniuk storytelling, beautiful new tales, and sloppy shorts that don't quite work. Luckily there's always a new story to try out if you find yourself lost.

Chuck Palahniuk is so twisted. I’ve had this audiobook in Audible forever and finally gave it a listen. Most of the short stories were completely weird and totally engaging. If you're looking for stories about a deadly massage therapist, a sexually adventurous horse, or a band of young men trying to escape from a conversion therapy camp – well this is the short story collection for you. Seriously, just wtf Chuck. These stories are so fucking weird. A handful fell on deaf ears, but whatever.
