I wasn't really sure how to rate this book. The beginning was promising. The surprise ending was good. The middle left a little something to be desired. I found it disorienting to be reading a book where the narrator was constantly lying. We know he lies because he makes up a different story every time. And, he seemed to be a total jerk and always felt the need to defend himself when called out about it.

A beautifully written, intriguing story. I really did not expect that ending!

It was unsettling. I’m not sure I liked it, but I also had to keep reading to see if the creepy feeling was for a reason.
Upon choosing this book, I thought it took place in the real country, Andorra, but if you know anything about geography you will realize quickly as you start reading that this is set in a fictional Andorra. That just added to the dreaminess or surreality of the book.
About halfway through, I described a scene to my husband as being like something from Camus’ “The Stranger.” But I always seem to think that when describing books in which the characters are overcome by heat and sun.

I think the author takes a lot of liberties with putting words into his character's mouths, but I loved the idea of the story, the imagery, and couldn't help falling in love with Alex. I loved the twist at the end--not too unbelievable or unexpected, but presented in such a way that it was unexpected.

Despite the luscious prose, I was fairly on the fence about this one until the last paragraph, and then... well played, Mr. Cameron!
