This book said, "I'm gonna be a smutty Hallmark movie" and held to that level of plot and character development. I didn't find the MCs 100% believable, and they changed their minds so quickly it gave me whiplash. Because of the surface-level development, I wasn't sold on their attraction (sex worker that is now disgusted at the thought of touching other women? Trust-fund socialite that immediately forgets about her lifelong flame?).That being said, the male MC is genuinely sweet, caring, and consent-focused.

There was a lot of bizarrely intro-level sex-positive feminism, including some sections that read as ignorantly anti-kink. Don't go here for nuanced discussions about sex, gender, or class. I don't want to yuck somebody's development, though. This COULD be a good intro for people trying to reckon with negative assumptions about sex work, female pleasure, and porn. I wouldn't recommend it for folks who have done deeper work around sex positivity.

This was a good brain break, and some of the writing was really nice and occasionally funny, but you get what you see (or less?).

My summary: Clara Wheaton is a prim and proper socialite who was raised with a silver spoon in her mouth. After graduating with a doctorate in art history but unhappy with her life, Clara decides to move across the country to LA for a chance with her long time crush, Everett. But when Clara arrives, Everett tells her—in a heartbreakingly platonic way—that he’s going on the road with his band and he’s rented his room out. The apartment is a quintessential filthy bachelor pad and Clara meets her new roommate, Josh, while questioning why she made the ridiculous decision to move across the country with no job for an unrequited love. Clara soon finds out that the disarmingly charming Josh is an adult film star, who has struggled with being stigmatized for his career. Despite the mismatch between he and Clara, opposites do attract and they each must come to terms with what that means for themselves.
My thoughts: This opposites-attract romance was not at all what I was expecting because I didn’t read a synopsis or anything before diving in. So I did not see the porn star angle coming at all, which I think made it more entertaining for me because I was surprised by it. I liked the narrator for Clara, but the narrator for Josh kind of annoyed me because he didn’t seem like a great fit for his character. It was overall witty but I’m not sure I’d call it a rom-com. I struggled to get through this one mostly because I started it on Spotify, which is the absolute worst for audiobooks, and ended up finishing it through Libby after my hold became available.

I don’t read many romances of this genre, but the change of conventions was interesting,  I enjoyed the sex worker angle, and appreciated the inclusion of queer characters. Good spice, very cute, but the ending felt a bit rushed.
