I started reading Villette spring/summer 2010, but haven't finished it yet. My hope is to one day finish it, but as of right now I have other books that keep drawing my attention elsewhere. :)
FINALLY finished it! This book was...long. The character development with the main character, Lucy Snowne, is amazing; especially with the amount of detail Charlotte Bronte gives. Bronte makes you feel what Lucy is going through while you are reading through the different stages of the book; the way she draws you into empathy with her characters is quite fascinating. However, the story line is as dull as the characters lives. The way the book ends makes you feel as depressed as much as Lucy probably is. Definitely not my favorite book, BUT, I haven't given up on the Brontes yet. This may have been a poor choice for a first read from the Bronte clan - I have heard Jane Eyre & Wuthering Heights are amazing!

I wanted to love this and it started off so well, the writing is beautiful but it was such a hard frustrating read
I tried, I really did. But I couldn't bring myself to like Lucy Snowe, or be at all interested in her story. After about 106 pages, I decided this just wasn't worth the struggle. I want to try again the fall - I fear this just isn't a summer book. It would be better suited to curling up on crisp fall days with a cup of tea, than stretching out under a tree on a humid 90-degree afternoon.
