Yes the prose is glorious - but the end - unforgivable!
I really enjoyed reading it but I was just left feeling like I'd been punched in the gut when I finished

I'm probably the exception in this...but I actually preferred the shorter novel from the male perspective, The Professor, of which this is a reworking. I stopped and restarted this one many times and it took me years to finish it.

Simply a masterpiece!!

Such an incredibly wordy book! And my main complaint is that after all the lectures and long, descriptive paragraphs, the few parts where the plot moves along are too concise. The parts where you actually want a little more description or dialogue she just vaguely glances over. Or even just references after the fact. Lame. Also not my favorite genre, so take it with a grain of salt.

I'll be thinking about this one for quite a while...

If you like dense psychologically complex portraits and untraditional protagonists, I highly recommend this novel. Charlotte Bronte takes her reader inside the flawed consciousness of Lucy Snowe, offering an honest depiction of the unravelling mind. Her unconventional masochistic romance makes Jane's and Rochester's look tame by comparison.
