A love story, not of romantic love, but the love between a father and daughter. And the love between longtime best friends. This was lovely and poignant.

I adored Ursula, the slightly magical cat.

Loved this book! Great 90's nostalgia mixed with a beautiful father/daughter relationship.

Murakami has the tendency to make sadsack losers in weird situations very cool (which i’ve found more annoying in recent rereads), but then Straub does one better and makes a sadsack loser in a weird situation a lifeless dud (which is even more annoying).

I’m not a big time travel fan. Iamdd slowwwwly starting to hate disjointed storylines or multiple perspectives as a trope. But I do have today as a writer, Emma Straub cuts words so classy and clean. I loved much of her wordplay and I did identify at times with Alice. But dear heavens, once she starts time traveling just to find what’s right or better was…ugh. Just ugh. The storyline overall fell apart for me at that point. That said, I bawled like a baby at the afterword

This book explored grief in a way that felt so raw and real. It also painted the most realistic portrait of a father-daughter relationship throughout the years, and a friendship that has grown alongside you. It made me laugh, cry and appreciate the people in my life. Definitely one I’ll turn to again.

I came to this book after seeing it on TikTok as a “read this instead of ‘Midnight Library’” - and I really enjoyed Midnight Library so of course was eager to check this out from my library. I loved it from page one and I cried throughout. This book is a love letter to love and change and sci-fi and youth and aging and fathers and New York City. I’m currently crying that it is over.
