This novella was a reread for me as I had read it many years ago as a young adult. I still love Headley but I am not "in love with the story" as I used to be perhaps because it is mot as haunting as I was all those years ago.
The story was slow but it did not feel like great work to keep up with the pacing. I liked the description of the setting and how the setting impacted the characters. The characters, especially Dezzy and Headley, were developed well but I could not empathize with Pam. I could even empathize with Headley's mother and I think I had more of a connection with Maizy but Pam was difficult even as a character because of her "scruples" I guess. The plot was tugged at by heart because of what was happening moreso to Headley but I was content with the ending. I was content because Headley, Dezzy and I came back to the good things but with more wisdom and personal growth.
