I know everybody loves this book, and Kai is portrayed as a member of the royal council of book boyfriends, but to me it didn’t really live up to the hype? At first I got a little too much of a hunger games vibe, but when the trials started I got over it and it felt more exciting, but it kind of just stayed there? A bit disappointed to be honest, but still a good book, just not as good as I thought it would be. Didn’t really feel the tension between Kai and Paedyn as much as I expected given the fact that’s been all over TikTok.

This is like if The Hunger Games was rated PG and had a FMC with an even worse name. I felt like the majority of this book the characters could have actually been 13 and nothing about the story would have changed, it was very juvenile. We are set in these deadly trials, but at one point an antagonist just throws pinecones? Very deadly. And our MMC, Kai, is supposedly this very morally gray enforcer who is a monster in everyone’s eyes for his cold-hearted killing, but then he kills maybe 3 people? I felt like the characters were pretty one dimensional. I liked the last 20% of the book, but not sure I’ll be finishing the series.
36 pages in. That’s how far I got. And probably the furthest I’ll ever get in this whole series (which I bought before reading the first book, stupid mistake).
There was nothing, I repeat: nothing, to make me like anyone or anything in this book/world. Everything was over explained and very basic/bland.
While I understand it’s a debut novel, it honestly felt like I was reading a not so well written Wattpad book. That’s where I’ll leave it.

Fell in love with this book it is 100% my favorite series I ever read. This book is heartbreaking but also catching and the characters are so well made to go along with the storyline
