The Long and Short of It by Jodi Taylor

I hate to give a book four stars and realize I'm bringing its average down.

I have read all the novels in this series except the last, and I think the shorts are better.
They couldn't exist without the novels, but still. As others have noted, these seem more relaxed, no one gets maimed, and there's not very much of Clive Bloody Ronan (I always use his full name), perhaps my least favourite character in all the books I've read.

Markham continues to advance in visibility and laughs, and it's clear now that Bairstow sees that Markham's talent for doing the wrong thing but getting the right result is exactly what the group needs to balance Max's talent for the opposite.

And I really liked the scene where Bairstow told the original funders "you don't say no." If you can't get around the paradoxes of dont-call-it-time-travel, you might as well play with them.

Still nothing about the people who go out ahead of Max each time and decide where to place the pod(s). There HAS to be a story there.

Och, this was pretty good. It would've been nice to read these short stories synchronistically with the novels. This listen would've been better if Book Fourteen hadn't left such a very bad taste in my mouth.

I really lucked out when I pick this up at the library. I could not put it down, read it straight through when I got home. It has everything - comedy, sci-fi. . . Even if something mysterious that I want to find out more about.
Taylor is an excellent writer. She has great characters, who are well-developed and interesting and her plots are super. The history is just an added bonus. But when I say history, don't get the idea that this is any kind of a dry old historical novel oh, it is anything but!

A bit of a mislead here. This is a compendium of all the prior vignettes, with an introduction as to Jodi's writing process for each, plus the bonus short story A Perfect Storm. I can't review that one separately yet but found it fantastic, as usual with anything Jodi writes.

I love these books! No unbiased opinions or reviews here, I'm afraid. My favourites were Markham's story and the one about the beginnings of St Mary's.
