This is a fabulous book about the power of algorithms that punish people; and we don't even know why.
For example:
1. Hiring algorithms that use mental health screening questions to block people with depression from getting minimum-wage jobs.
2. Police algorithms that target low-level crimes to get more arrests.
3. Algorithms that actually reject college students from a safety school, thinking that that kid will also reject them.
4. People who wield algorithms to impress rather than clarify. I have fun into that several times myself.

Not a place to find a scientific approach to the problem.

A Modern classic as far as I'm concerned when it comes to the potential harms of Machine Learning. She was early to sound the alarm, and its fun to see what she forsaw

I liked this book. It makes a compelling argument for more transparency around algorithms and how they are influencing our society. The examples highlight are disturbing, but at times feel little cherry picked. Multi-national corporations with unchecked power seem to be a bigger deal. Algorithms are just a tool for them to abuse. Wanted this book to lay out how to undo some of the damage done and put us on a better path. The book did not.

The subject matter that the book deals with is becoming increasingly important to be aware of nowadays, and it includes many instances where the effects of WMDs are not readily apparent to the naked eye. BUT, the author's writing felt too tedious and hard to get through.
