The last third felt a little tapped on, but the last scene was brilliant. Sally Rooney made me fall in love with the concept of descriptions of ambiance. She creates such a simple but pleasing atmosphere, and she has made stream of consciousness her own. Really, some scenes of this book wrecked me.

This was a good book. I usually don’t like books with no plot, but this one was okay. However, what is with the lack of quotation marks???????? It made it very hard to read sometimes. It’s also written partly in present tense which I don’t read a lot of so that was interesting. The story was interesting and sad and just depicts growing up. It was well written (apart from the quotation marks - i know it was a stylistic choice but i didn’t like it) and dived into some interesting concepts about what it means to be a normal person.

I had seen the tv show, loved it, so wanted to read the book because well yeah I love to read. I was happily surprised by the accuracy of the tv adaptation every time I read a scene or dialogue that sounded familiar. Some things were just read out loud from the book and I adore that accuracy, because it is fucking rare as all of us know by now. Anywho, strongly recommend this book if you like contemporary fiction. (Beware of triggering topics before reading)

A vivid and emotional story about a young couple who are still trying to figure themselves out in a messy world. The dynamics between Marianne and Connell and how they struggle with their feelings remind me a lot of how I often behave at times. The moments when there are hidden forces pushing you at the back of your mind, making you feel and do things that you can’t properly explain, and sometimes, you feel like you barely even know yourself. Just like normal people, they have insecurities, fears, doubts, and desires that they don't know how to make sense of, forcing them to question their identities many times throughout the story.

A lot of readers seem to have problems with the miscommunication issues between the two, but I honestly find them quite realistic. They both have pretty understandable reasons to keep things from each other, and they are not equipped enough to effectively unpack their emotions and the traumatic experiences they’ve gone through. As someone with social anxiety, their misunderstandings with each other are what I relate to the most since it can be so hard to comprehend what goes on in other people’s minds.

Overall, this is such an enjoyable read. I blazed through this pretty quickly, and by the end of the book, I am proud of the characters for what they’ve gone through and I feel like I've learned quite a bit from those two.
