A cosmopolitan’s perspective of the cosmos. I love how Sagan describes our place in the universe and here on Earth. Some of the information is dated/incorrect (on the mass and speed of the neutrino for example) but this does not distract from the overall message of the book.

"For we are the local embodiment of a Cosmos grown to self-awareness. We have begun to contemplate our origins: starstuff pondering the stars; organized assemblages of ten billion billion billion atoms considering the evolution of atoms; tracing the long journey by which, here at least, consciousness arose. Our loyalties are to the species and the planet. We speak for Earth. Our obligation to survive is owed not just to ourselves but also to that Cosmos, ancient and vast, from which we spring."

I understand the hype around this book. Amazing is an understatement. I sincerely believe that a person reading this early in life, where their dreams are still forming, this could really inspire that person. Even though this has been published almost half a century ago, many of the ideas and questions in this book still apply to modern society. I believe any person that is interested in the humanity's future must read this book. Highly recommended to science geeks out there. Thank you, Carl Sagan.

"We are like butterflies, who flutter for a day and think it is forever" Although this book is very scientific, Carl Sagan manages to explain his ideas and theories in a way that even someone who hasn't a clue can understand it! An enjoyable read, though some things were a little advanced for me.

Yeah I really like this book. Carl Sagan is such a master at capturing his imagination and this book was so !!!!. It's filled with such wonder and joy; it barely feels like a nonfiction, it feels like a story Sagan is telling and that story just happens to be about the universe. It's a book for absolute beginners, yet he never talks down to his audience. His goal isn't to demonstrate his superior knowledge; it's to try to instill the love of space into everyone who reads it, It's filled with such awe and reverence, like a child looking into the night sky for the first time. And as much as he loves space, he has so much love for humanity too. He talks about the state of the world (at the time of publication, mostly the Cold War) and how he hopes humanity can grow into something more, something cooperative so we can one day explore the universe as one being. There are so many beautiful quotes from it, like "We are but butterflies who flutter for a day and think it is forever". And I like that it's exactly 365 pages long, I can't help but think that was on purpose. I'm so glad I finally finished this book like 4 years after getting it; it gives me so much to look forward to in my studies.
