This one's going to take some time to process, but it was so good. Sami is a protagonist going through so much, with such a trek ahead of her, and until things start to unfold it doesn't really seem large until it hits just how bad her situation is. But she doesn't stop going, that's what got me here, she's a bright light for so many people when she shouldn't have to be. I loved every minute of this, and I would wholeheartedly recommend it as an analysis of grief and processing, this was fantastic.

I will say, my copy had a few editing errors, but they were miniscule enough that I didn't really pick up on it as a regular occurrence.

Toten authentically shows eight pivotal days in the life of Sami, a girl trying hard to be a regular teen, but her world is far from regular, what with the secrets she thinks she needs to keep in order to have acceptance in her community. A nuanced and unflinching look at what it's like to be a young person doing everything right, doing everything they can to achieve what others take for granted, fearing that one false step can wash it all away.
Brava.

too many 3.5 star ratings these days i just dont think i can give it any higher...  ; anyways its an important story and not altogether unenjoyable ofc, i liked it, but also felt scammed by the fact the cover depicts 3 teens on a roadtrip. that is not what happened. and the cover is cheerfully colored. it was one of those books where i felt the passing of every single page (not to that extreme a degree in this one), especially at the end, when i almost couldnt wait for it to end. and on a peculiar note it ended. baby steps. still, a lot of the emotional baggage wasn't resolved to my liking. thats just me. this is worth a read if you're in a similar situation as an alcoholic or someone close to one. i just dont think i can give it any higher. it was a great blend of cultures, esp often stereotyped ones
