This is a very thorough history of the French Revolution through the Thermidorian reaction. I think it is informative, but ultimately ideological: from the outset, Schama clearly wants to say that the revolution was driven primarily by violence. And that does a disservice in many ways, I feel.

Schama's Burkian obsession with The Terror and violence drags down this book and colors his analysis too much to make this anything besides a doorstopper with some interesting chapters here and there

Great resource for ancient regime info as well as early revolutionary period, but noticing that he introduces smaller (yet interesting) details without much reference to the big and important ones. Going to read a more specified book on the terror and war in the Vendee. Good read for those 700 pages though!
