I am now regretting the fact that this series doesn't have undercover agents. If it had, I could take abut undercover characters with on-the-cover sexiness.

(Yes, I am still going on about the bare-chested men on these covers; they make me happy I'm reading these on Kindle as opposed to print, but I realized last night that I was comparing the luminosity of my new Kindle with someone else's *while showing them a page from this novella which happened to have a sex scene on it*. This one is totally my fault.)

So. "Eater of Lives". The paranormal police force (Spectr) is trying to track down a serial killer who enjoys gnawing on human beings - maybe the serial killer is a human, or maybe it's not, it's hard to tell at the beginning of the story. John Starkweather and Caleb, the contractor hired by Spectr because he's sharing a body with Gray, a big, scary entity named who preys on demons, are doing their best to hunt down the killer, while slowly coming to the conclusion that they both like Gray and don't want him destroyed. But if he isn't removed from Caleb soon, the situation will be permanent, and that's a bit of an issue, as well.

There's a cliffhanger at the end of the novella, which hints that the overarching plot is finally going to hit us in the next installment.

Oh, gosh! How something can be so creepy and yet lovely?

The antagonist here is really, really nasty; a Wendigo! And somehow, exorcising Gray from Caleb gets relegated.

I love how conflicted John is about the whole thing, I love How unsure Caleb is about the whole thing, and OMG! a vulnerable Gray? Having feelings for Caleb and John! Best thing ever.

Except for the ending, which was glorious, but if I didn't already have the next book it would have make me scream bloody murder :P

Brad Langer keeps being fabulous, and this series is AMAZING!

This would have been a 5 but it is a cliffhanger, so not a complete story. You must go to the next book to get the whole story. I believe the last 3 are all one book, why not make it one book under 400 pages? Oh there is the demon story just like they all seem to have with the over arc of what is going on with Grey and Spectr and John. But really SPECTR is the big story, not the side plot of the windigo that they are hunting. I just read it and I can barely remember that part and more the relationship between John and Caleb/Grey and the people, mainly Sean, the best friend and the R&D guy, Forsyth. Also John's ex boyfriend shows up, which puts a wrench into the thoughts of where things were going. It is really good but nothing is answered except the wendigo possession and it is left complete on a cliffhanger for everything in their lives.

This felt like a very transitional book to me. I enjoyed it, but the plot wasn't especially compelling on its own. Most of the action in the book seemed to be aimed at adding some new stressors in order to advance the overarching story to a turning point. It did leave me pretty impatient to read the next book, though, so I guess it served its purpose.

The wendigo in this story is really just a backdrop to the real conflict: both John and Caleb having feelings for Gray and being unable to tell each other about them.

Normally in relationships, conflict born from miscommunication or lack of communication really annoys me, but in this book they both have such good and logical reasons for thinking they can't tell the other that, rather than making an infuriating situation, makes a really moving and tragic one instead.
