I should have realized I would be confused by this book. Japanese authors seem to have that effect on me. I feel a little betrayed by the synopsis, expecting a host story and getting a coming of age one instead. The lack of chapters was unique, although I missed them. This was my first exposure to Banana, like all things I can't pass judgement on a single experience, so at some point I will revisit her. But with a completely different mindset.

This is a sad and thought-provoking book. We follow the mindset of a woman in her 30s who has recently lost her father and is going through a process in the aftermath of that.
The setting is dark and moody - I do not recommend this book to people who are in the middle of a depression.

Not a plot driven novel in a traditional Western three-act structure sense, this story tells of how a young woman comes to terms and processed the grief surrounding the unexpected timing and manner of her father's death. I found this an interesting read. Sometimes it is hard to know how much is lost via the translation process and this was one I wondered at times. However, having a vague knowledge of Tokyo and the areas made it more fluent in seeing how the story worked.
