This book is amazing! The narrator encourages those who feel distance with others due to their backgrounds/heritage/identities to reach out and connect. I love the examples and the illustrations that are full of warmth and color. Wonderful.

For: readers looking for a book about connection and diversity.

Possible red flags: feelings of loneliness, inadequacy, and isolation.

Exquisite artwork accompanies lyrical words with a tremendous message of finding a way to connect and the wonders that can appear when you succeed.

I think the message may be a bit complicated for the younger of the picture book readers but I do think this is a story that should be read, shared, and discussed prior to that scary first-day-of-school.

Not quite what I expected but I really loved the message of how we each have our own uniqueness that helps to make the world a better place.

I don't normally rate the books I read to my kids, but this one got to me and I didn't want to forget it. The pictures are so pretty, and the writing is poetic. The theme was too deep for my 2 year old to understand much of, but she liked the pictures and I liked the message. We all feel like we're on the outside sometimes, but we don't need a group identical to ourselves to find belonging; we all share some similarities.

The illustrations are beautiful and the final message about all people being different is great but most of the book is sad/negative. You may find yourself being judged by others, you may find yourself alone, etc. I see the reason for the message but to read a book to my little that bummed me out is not my favorite. I would have rather they focused on the fact that being different is great or being alone is ok and that you’ll always find commonalities with others if you try.

Beautiful and moving. The writing is perfectly paired with vibrant and gorgeous illustrations. A must-read for kids finding their place in the world, being proud of who they are, and finding friendship in others.

A book that shows everyone has times when they feel different and stuck as an outsider, but that those details can combine with the things we have in common with others to make a much more interesting and inclusive world.
