Oh god this was hard to read. I didn't really mind that this was really long (600+ pages! damn), but it was more that there was a slow sense of foreshadowing that something big was going to go wrong, and that the other shoe was going to drop that had me so anxious. And then I heard that it was going to be angst central from 65 - 85% I got too stressed to continue reading for about two weeks

Well this book was very long. It was good though. I wasn't sure if the little girl Cat (Catherine) is who ends up being the Cat we know from the raider camp but his book is next so I guess we'll find out. That would be cute, if highly coincidental, for Jugs to have had that interaction with his mom and sibling.

Anyway Lor (the character) is pretty amazing. Lor and Jugs are adorable together. There was just so much time that they weren't together. This was the first Monstrous book that I had to set down and take a break because of how it dragged. All the books have had some element of heaviness but this one lacked the fun that can usually be found in this series.

I did really like the background info on the salyik. I love Moth so I'm curious about anything related to him.

Looking forward to Cat and Lyri's story, and whoever else there may be!

🌶️🌶️

I'm sending Lily Mayne my therapy bill. Just because Lor and Jugs got their happy ending doesn't make up for the chapters and chapters of heartbreak and tears. While many of the other books in this series have had character stories that have tugged at my heart (I'm looking at you Moth, Aury, Seraph and Gloam) I have never needed tissues while reading. I needed tissues this time. Several of them. There were ugly tears. Lily Mayne, how could you hurt these sweet little babies so? Rude!

While I might not have loved Jugs and Lor quite as much as I have loved other characters/couples (Moth and Charlie and Danny and Wyn are probably my top two), I really enjoyed the story they brought to the table. I really enjoyed getting to see how monster royalty worked, getting a lot more background on the social structures in their world, and how the monsters viewed the "void" and the introduction to the "otherworld." It was a nice vacation from the human world, and I'm hoping to see more books set in the monsters' world.

I also liked how the majority of this book was from Lor's POV, which was different from its predecessors. Also loved the chapters in which Lor and Jugs couldn't understand one another (the miscommunications were a riot) and seeing how Lor, Lyri, Seis, and Gryf perceived the human as a creature instead of the other way around.

Really enjoyed getting to know Lyri and I'm excited to see where his and Cat's story takes us. (How long do I have to wait? *Whines* I'm not used to having to wait for the next instalment.) I'm also wondering if Gryf gets a story based on an offhand comment made late in the book. Or maybe Talimuth? To be completely honest, I don't think I ever want this series to end. I've never read a series in which every single book has been such a joy to read. I think the lowest rating I've given any of these books is a 4.5? Maaaybe a 4?

Oh my god, Lor, my baby
