I strongly believe each book in the series grows not only in confidence of prose and style, but in maturity. At this point in the series Brown realizes his characters maintain a core of staying power that allows their actions and decision making to reflect greater stakes and plot shifts.

The institution politically-riven narrative becomes heavy, and if it were done any sooner, I recognize that many fans might take to this as an ill-informed decision in forwarding the story; however, it is masterful in its incorporation and presents characters with a looming burden of light vs. dark, good and evil, and the powerful driving forces felt in the greatest of stories. Pierce Brown owns you after this installment, and prepares his audiences for something incomprehensibly large in consideration for where it all started.

The characters introduced in book 4 are more memorable, full, and believable to a point that their loss is genuinely felt throughout the rest of the saga. The best in the series, yet.

Minus .25 stars solely because I want to throttle Darrow O’Lykos.

This is definetly on the slower side compared to the pacings of the first 3 but it is definitely necessary considering where Pierce Brown takes this world. I would put this in the lower half of my rankings for the series, but it is still an incredible book. We get introduced to some great POVs and crucial characters that drive the story. Coming back to the Lysander/Pytha/Cassius trio after reading Lightbringer is gut wrenching.. Pierce Brown makes us want to love Lysander just to have him rip us to shreds.
