Out on a Limb was one of my most anticipated indie-turned-traditionally-published books out in 2024 and it was amazing! I had heard so many good things about it and how it dealt with the pregnancy trope in a fantastic way. As someone who isn’t a fan of that trope (mostly when it’s dropped later in a story), between OOAL and Ready or Not by Cara Bastone, I think I actually like it now 😂

Like in her Next series, Hannah Bonam-Young takes some serious and hard to write about subjects and packages them elegantly into a contemporary romance. Her writing is actually LOL funny, the banter is bantering and the romance is tender and sweet in all the right places. The writing development from the Next series to OOAL is amazing, and I thought about Bo and Win when I wasn’t reading (and after I finished I wanted to know what they were doing before my brain remembered I finished).

It was really refreshing to read about characters that are differently abled, how they see the world and are treated by the world. It hit close to home because my grandpa became a double leg amputee later in his life and set his mind to do everything he had done beforehand, including driving!

Bo and Win both had pasts with some baggage, but they ultimately were able to work through it together. Seeing life through their eyes was immensely compelling and endearing at times. The friendships in this story are also so precious, Caleb and Sarah, as well as Bo’s gang of D&D friends. Overall, the whole story was just really lovable/enjoyable and dealt with the sad/serious topics in a gentle way.

Two 🌶️ on spice, starts out full steam and then is a slow burn!

Trigger warnings (which are listed at the front of the book - don’t miss the author’s note before reading because it’s really insightful): pregnancy, suicide, ableism, verbal abuse, cancer, amputation, etc.

Thank you to Dell Romance for an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

The first half of this book I was really enjoying, but then my interest started to wain.

First off the characters themselves were very well crafted. I love them and of course the representation was great. I enjoyed their development throughout the story. Also, surprised I didn’t mind the accidental pregnancy trope. I thought it was well done in this book.

With that being said, this story was “too happy” for me. I wanted drama I wanted the characters to struggle navigating through this change. It felt so unrealistic with how perfect everything turned out. From beginning to end, there were no problems/ the solutions were easy. It made the story feel unrealistic and a tad boring.

Lastly, there was a scene that I struggled to get through. The D and D scene. I was not impressed with how that scene played out. As a geek myself, I was kind of offended by it and felt like it didn’t really add anything with the story aside from meeting the Robert’s friends.

Overall, if you’re looking for a happy go lucky positive story with excellent representation, this one is for you!

My most favorite HBY by far!! Out on a Limb is an absolute treasure (arrrrr!). I know that this surprise pregnancy took the romance world by storm when it came out, and it's so deserved!! This book taught me more about loving others and what that looks like in any relationship.

Win, the fmc, has a limb difference like HBY. HBY shares her raw and honest thoughts in an author's note before the book and it makes the story that much more special. Win's journey to motherhood may not look like what we're used to in romance but it's important and necessary that it gets to take up space on shelves around the world. I love her so much! She's laugh-out-loud funny, compassionate, and the kind of character that I wish was real so I could have her in my life.

The people were right when they said Bo is the perfect book boyfriend. Ha! Everything he does proves just how much he loves Win. From splitting finances equitably, to constantly surprising her with not-so-wanted but necessary expensive gifts. He's a sweet man with a huge heart (and other things ;)). A romance that's all about being chosen by the person you love. I will be screaming about this from the rooftops for the remainder of my life. Everyone should read it!

Such a lovely, wholesome story. Bo and Win grow together and fall in love in such a sweet way. The friendship, romance, and spice between them is perfect.

I’ve never read a book with a pregnancy trope like this. I feel like it’s usually the bow authors put at the end of a story to tie everything together, but here it’s the first thing that happens!

No 3rd act break up!!!

While I tend to be very leery of books that are showered with immense praise, Out On A Limb proved to be a funny, realistic, refreshing, and sexy read. I enjoyed it thoroughly, as so many others before me. Pregnancy after a memorable one night stand? Not usually my trope of choice. However, OOAL is the kind of story that is so engaging and entertaining that you’ll potentially reconsider. I appreciated the on page discussions of reproductive choice, between Win and her doctor, Win and Sarah, and Win and Bo. Pregnancy is often inaccurately portrayed (from a physical perspective) in the romance genre, layered on top is the emotional weight of having to decide how to approach a potential co-parent. Your hormones are literally going haywire, your body is creating a whole other human, and you’re having to navigate a potential minefield of emotions! And to its credit, OOAL takes all of that into consideration and pulls it off with such intentional care. I loved that this book also had an own voices aspect to the disability rep. It is thoughtful and never comes across as ableist “inspiration p*rn.” The fact that Win has to comes to term with her own internalized ableism and natural concerns about the baby’s health was so relatable, and speaks to the deep seated concerns that many women feel but don’t often voice during their pregnancies.

And yes. Bo is absolutely as wonderful, emotionally vulnerable, caring, funny, and nerdy as you’d expect from a picture perfect book boyfriend.
