You guys. YOU GUYS. Our detective crew gets A DOG. A super smart supernaturally tough killing machine of a dog who’s actually very sweet once you get to know her. Also, there’s a rogue werewolf running around doing some pretty horrible stuff to innocent women. It’s a frustratingly familiar trope of the murder mystery genre I usually try to avoid, but fortunately not the norm in this series.
This was definitely my favorite book in the series (so far).
Everything in Hunter's Trail was tied together perfectly. The relationships between the characters were more fully developed and flushed out, giving even secondary characters a multi-dimensional feel.
This time the love triangle was more obvious, but I actually didn't mind because I felt that it was handled in a realistic (although not exactly mature) way. In the end, I felt that it definitely worked out for the best, and the resolution that was there was one of the better love triangle resolutions that I've seen.
Again, I have to commend Olsen on the absolutely fabulous world building that she's done. I really could get a feel for how distinct the Vampires, Witches, and Werewolves were from each other without getting campy and clichéd.
As per usual, I felt that the writing was very natural. There was nothing that I read that jarred me enough to break my concentration while reading. I've found that in many urban fantasy novels, I find that my concentration is broken by an awkward explanation or description but that wasn't the case with this book or the entire Scarlett Bernard series.
I can't wait to read the next book!

I tried, but I just couldn't get into this series at all, and this last book was no exception. Though I really liked the story, the details of the investigation, and the mythology behind the werewolves and a new set of villains, the story seemed too long and came to a slightly abrupt end. It wasn't just that the end confrontation was painfully brief. Everything just seemed to close together smoothly. I would have expected a few more hiccups. Also, I wasn't happy with the way the love triangle was resolved. It seemed like author Olson just chose someone because she had to make a decision, and it wasn't the person I expected it to be. The words "I love you" were tossed in just to be there, and I didn't get a sense they actually meant anything to Scarlett. Those aren't words you just throw around because you want to hear them. In first person POV, they have to make the character's heart do something so we can relate to what they feel. Not the case here. I wish I could have given this series more admiration, but it just wasn't for me.

There was a lot more going on, plot-wise, in this book than the previous two. It wrapped up pretty well, though the denouement didn't satisfy quite as well as I'd have preferred. Also, I retract most of my complaints about the love triangle. I could write an entire essay on where the trope subversion succeeded and where it didn't, but I won't, so you'll just have to take my word for it: Olson subverted the love triangle trope in some places and didn't manage to in others.
Overall, I'm glad to have read the entire trilogy. I won't be specially buying any more of the books unless they go on, like, heavy-duty sale, but I'll definitely look for them at the library.

Good.. but that ending was kind of disappointing for me.
Have you ever had a ship that you shipped so freaking hard.. only to have this series end with them not together? I can't be okay with friendship. I can't accept Scarlett with someone else. I don't care that they "love" each other - love sucks. I'm mad. #TeamJessie.
Hunter's Trail is the final book of the Scarlett Bernard series. There was a bit of betrayal and some mystery in this book. It kind of kept me on my toes but I was a little bored with this book. Scarlett's hurt for most of it. Yet, she still has to do her job which kind of sucks. She still funny every now and then.. but I'm still salty AF that she didn't end up with Jessie. Eli's cool and all but ugh, I loved Jessie.
Other than that, I'm glad that I finally finished this series.. even if I finished the spin-off first (oops?) I enjoyed them both and I will definitely look forward to another book/series by this author.
