You don't have to be indigenous to feel the terror of being prey to the "man camps" or to unknown men in the woods. This book took the-bear-or-the-man question quite literally, as they were perfectly okay to run in the woods with bear spray, no one worried about them, it was natural and they could protect themselves. But once there was the rumor of a woman harmed in the woods, the whole town knew it was men and no one went out alone after that, day or night. Also, if you've never felt the fear of a predatory man threatening you, knowing the myriad of horrors he could do to you, you're a lucky person, because it is awful. I'll take wild animals or monsters any day. And this story nailed what it's like to be a target of predatory man/men, and OMG, some people will be very triggered.
That all said, the mystery in this book was edgy and sharp, the characters and relationships relatable, likable, and lovely depictions of indigenous culture and the type of support the women share with women was moving and inspirational. I was very moved by the author's note in the end, citing Pocahontas and Sacajawea as the earliest documented female child victims of human trafficking of indigenous people, and it makes me want to tear down the history section at the library where I work. I loved the women in this story. LOVED them! And though I wouldn't wish any more trauma and crime upon them, I'd read 100 more books about them if Marcie Rendon wrote them. They feel like a part of me now.
I'm a huge fan of Marcie Rendon, and this is by far her best book. I will be shouting about it from proverbial rooftops for a long time.
