I have always loved the Anna Pigeon series by Navada Barr. While it is hopeful that I never encounter the scenarios that Ranger Pigeon does, I enjoy the insights to the various national parks that Ms Pigeon works in. I find the books well researched and the parks I have visited are recognizable. That said, this particular book is set on the Natchez Trace, oozing all things southern. As with several of her other novels, I have to remind myself that they can't kill the heroine of the series, can they? Definitely a thriller with some mystery thrown in.

Park ranger Anna Pigeon has been transferred again, this time in order to get a promotion, which are hard to come by in the park service. She’s being sent to the Natchez Trace in Mississippi, and as she drives all her worldly possessions down to her new park, she quickly feels like a fish out of water. But soon she discovers boys messing around in a graveyard after dark, a young high school girl left drunk and alone in a party dress, and soon after, the body of a second girl.

This mystery went in some interesting directions as Anna is forced to investigate despite uncooperative new colleagues at her new ranger station, good ol’ boy locals, and an unfortunate number of hungry alligators lurking about. I thought the investigation part was especially methodical this time and liked the way the new romance as well as conflicts with colleagues played into it at times. Bonus points for great scenes with her cat Piedmont and especially with dog, Taco.

Picked this up bevause my sister's a park ranger, but found it too dense for what I was in the mood for.

I'm revisiting Nevada Barr and #8 was the earliest book in my possession. I liked it, but, honestly, was there really a need for her to not even stop in to the veterinarian's to visit Taco? for, what, 2-3 days? I take animal neglect and disinterest by the owner very seriously. My estimation of Anna Pigeon plummeted.
