A quick sweet read, although the plot twist in the end was completely unnecessary.

Short, sweet ladies book. The author set it up to make it sound like a normal storyline, but by the end there were so many random set-ups that fell into place pefectly it made it so it wasn't a "real" story. But I was entertained throughout.

This book is a blatant rip-off of The Blue Castle by L.M. Montgomery. It was not worth my time reading it. I didn't like about of the characters, and it took a bizarre turn towards the end. I would not recommend it.

I decided to read this after seeing that McCullough was accused of plagiarizing L.M. Montgomery's The Blue Castle. There are significant similarities and unquestionable differences. Elements of the differences are utterly charming - the improved familial relationships among the women and the eventual semi-overthrow of patriarchal exploitation they experience at the hand of their cousins/brothers/uncles. Other parts were entirely off-putting - unfortunately to mention these would be to give away a large piece of engine and resolution of the plot.

Quite an enjoyable Australian tribute to L. M. Montgomery's novel, [b:The Blue Castle|35126039|The Blue Castle|L.M. Montgomery|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1494682711l/35126039._SY75_.jpg|1298683], but not on par with the original.

Also, I was baffled by one of the plot "twists"
Spoilerthe supernatural element
. I think it was absolutely unnecessary and spoilt the book somewhat for me.

It is late in the 1800's. In an Austrilian town filled with the children of one man, the men are greedy and selfish and their wives are possibly even worse. The spinsters and the widows are struggling to make ends meet with no hope of a financial relief. Until Missy finds her voice.

This would have been a five star book, but it turned out to be a fairytale/ghost story and that really bugged me, so a three.

Oh and The Blue Castle was better.
