I just didn’t quite enjoy the way it was structured / Bacon’s voice throughout the novel. Will deffo be reading more non-fiction around the topic though!

Ohhh, that hit the spot! 
It might not be what you're looking for when you want to read a completely accurate historical fiction, but if you're not bothered by modern language and a "Fleabag" feel to your Jacobean era, give it a read.
