As a general rule memoir's are harder to read, because knowing it is a true story makes it more painful and you are hyper aware that it is a real world problem/situation. In the dream house is no exception, if anything it is even more difficult to read because of the themes dealt with.

Carmen Maria Machado's writing is phenomenal, her ability to tell such a painful story in an engaging way is amazing.

It definitely deserves all the praise it got, but it's definitely not a easy book to read.

The author found a unique way of reflecting and documenting her personal experience in a queer abusive relationship, and pulled it off beautifully. Her raw, devastating, and poetic writing shows off the author's strength in taking writing tropes and genres and using it to dissect her experiences, and make her own archive about a narrative that is traditionally dominated by straight, cis white men

A journey unlike any other. A concoction of fears and hopes and desires and pain and laughter.

Carmen writes with the patience of [a:Francesca Lia Block|9072|Francesca Lia Block|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1530045619p2/9072.jpg], the wildness of [a:Anaïs Nin|7190|Anaïs Nin|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1468617897p2/7190.jpg], and the honesty of [a:Sandra Cisneros|13234|Sandra Cisneros|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1342038396p2/13234.jpg].

I started ugly crying at page 20. I had a fit of laughter at page 176. I had to face some of my own minor trauma at page 209. And I felt seen after page 1.
