(3.75/5) This quick read is gritty and fast-paced and somehow manages to fit a whole story within maybe a hundred/hundred fifty pages. The art is visually interesting, and the story conveys the trauma experienced by the main characters. I wish that there had been a bit more to capture the passage of time and the character growth. This would make for a good series, but also works as a standalone.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance copy of this graphic novel in exchange for an honest review.

A super simplistic story. I really love the Descender series by Lemire, but relative to that not much really happens in Sentient. It was alright.

A spaceship's AI goes rogue and takes a group of kids under its custody. Acting as their parent we see the relationships that form and the ultimate showdown when the kids meet another group of adults. I liked some of the characters, others were a bit thin.

Great pacing. A master class in moving sequential art narrative along. Gorgeous art. The idea seems cliche but there is enough subtlety here to fill in the blanks with humanity. Ending maybe felt rushed and unbalanced, however.

Ultimately pretty formulaic and predictable. Weak on character. Walta's art is fine -- he's good with expressions -- but his environments are a little lacking in pop. Lemire, who I normally love, feels a bit bored with it all. This is not nearly as good as his recent work in Descender and Royal City.

It's not an unbelievable book that'll blow your balls off, but what I like is that it's a self-contained story. Beginning, middle, and end is all here. That does help separate it from some other Jeff Lemire comics. I feel like there are about 50 kajiblion books by Lemire, and sometimes I can't remember which was which or which I've read. Someone needs to start a web site: LemireArcsThatAreComplete.com so that I know which ones I can go start to finish on. I don't know how Jeff, who must be a hive mind of some kind, possibly an AI built by DC to write comics at an alarming pace, puts out this much stuff.
