Things this manga did right: the art was great, I liked the main character and the plot twist about the dad. Things it did wrong: too much fan service and the best friend is quite annoying.

Boring I don’t like slice of life feeling books I need more of a plot

Mieruko-chan Vol. 1

This is a great mild horror manga. Each chapter is composed of different circumstances of Miko-chan who sees monsters that no one else can. She tries her best ignoring them even though she’s really afraid. So far there’s no clear storyline yet aside from her preventing encountering the creatures, but I heard this manga is on its way into having a plot soon. Regardless, I like it the way it is now and I’m looking forward to reading more about it.

I can't decide how to feel about this series.

I really like the general concept, artwork, and even the main character. Teen who sees ghosts, but tries to not react to not pull them in, its a great idea.

But this first volume is a lot of the same thing over and over, and I lost interest pretty fast. I have heard there is a larger connected story that is introduced in vol 2, so I think I am at least going to try to that to see if it pulls me in.

Mieruko is just a normal high school girl living a normal life — until the day she starts to see ghosts.

Around every corner, next to her on the bus, in her locker, by her desk —ghosts or creatures or monsters. Whatever they are, they’re everywhere. No one else can see them but her.

So, what’s Mieruko to do now?

Ignore them.

If she doesn’t acknowledge them, they can’t hurt her, right?

For the most part, they tend to lose interest fairly quickly anyway. If Mieruko doesn’t give them any reactions, they also can’t totally know she can see them.

But, by watching these beings, Mieruko begins to realize that they don’t all seem all that bad??? They’re super scary but they can also be helpful??? When they want to be….

How long though can Mieruko pretend not to see these ghosts? And, what will happen when they decide they’re done playing pretend with her?

This is such a delightfully macabre story and unexpectedly good start to a new series! I’m very pleasantly surprised with this one! I thought it was just going to be a straightforward little horror manga but it’s not really that kind of story at all.

To be honest, I’m not entirely sure what genre this manga falls into. It’s got some truly disturbing monsters but it’s very much a slice of life story with some ecchi elements to it. It even has some wholesome, heartfelt moments dropped in.

I think this is a good series for horror fans looking for a different approach to telling spooky stories and/or this is a good one for slide of life fans who want an edgier story for a change~
