A quick read but not quite as good as the other Palahniuk
novels that I have read. The book starts out as a confusing read but things become clearer as the story proceeds. The novel is told in the form of the diary of Misty Wilmont, a former artist living in a small island community. It's creepy with a vibe similar to a Hitchcock film.

Hollywood has made us accustomed to getting the resolution to a cycle. When a story involves a legend that happens over and over, we're usually watching the final time. The one that breaks the cycle. If you like stories with happy endings wrapped up in a nice little bow, this isn't what you're looking for. There's a faint hint of maybe a happy ending later down the road, but you're reading about someone smack dab in the middle of the cycle of pain and torture. I like that, you might not. Palahniuk has plenty of other (much better) books, sure, but this one is good enough to deserve a read as well. Though, my favorite Palahniuk book is Lullaby which most people seemed to dislike, so if you want to take my opinion with a grain of salt I'd understand.

This is the third book by Palahniuk I decided to read. "Haunted" was my first try, and I thoroughly, genuinely liked it. "Invisible Monster" was a fight with a big reward waiting for me in the end.

After this one, I may need to take a long break before finally getting to "Fight Club".

I love the fact that I may refer to Palahniuk as the most innovative language designer of this and, maybe, the past century. But sadly, referring to this book, it may well be the only thing I love about him.

I was tired of reading this endless writing style exercise leading to a shallow plot twist in the end. The whole story may be summarized in 3 sentences, the character development and depth equals nothing, and the shocking disgusting parts are getting older with each Palahniuk's book I attempt to enjoy.

I didn't like it. I need a break.

Type of read: Commuter

What made me pick it up: I'm a fan of Palahniuk and slowly working my way through his books.

Overall rating: I realize the book description says this, but this is written as a coma diary from Misty to her husband Peter. But it also delves into the mind of Peter and goes from his view and the bouncing back and forth is a bit confusing. Additionally, because I read my audiobooks on my commute and while I'm working, I always appreciate a good chapter break. There are no true chapters in this book. Yes, there's a table of contents that has chapters outlined; however, when you're going through the book, there is no natural stop or start to those sections (at least in the audio version, it's extremely hard to find). It was with about a quarter left of the book that I finally went 'whhhhhaaaaaatttttt?!?!?!' There's quite a bit of blubbery build-up where you're left trying to figure out who is talking to who and why this or that thought matters. Honestly, I'm still not sure of exactly what I read but I can tell you that I wasn't expecting the ending. I don't know if the whole book is worth that last little bit but it did keep me on my toes. Just not one of my favorite Palahniuk books.

Reader's Note: As mentioned in the description, 'Diary' contains a whole storyline revolving around suicide, death, and mental abuse through medical interventions.

O my god, this was depressing! I think I was so happy to discover it was overdue, I took it right back then and there. That poor woman!

I liked the book and it kept me interested. I did not know what was going to happen and did not expect the outcome. Nor did I think it would have turned out to be a supernatural story as it did.
